Spam Group FaceTime Calls with over 32 members

Starting around 2 am this morning I began receiving group facetime calls from a mix of numbers in my contacts and random numbers I didn't have saved. Since then I've received about 7 more calls throughout the day. The calls only ring once or twice before ending. What's even more interesting is that, after going back through the numbers involved in the calls in the "recents" tab of the facetime app, there were more than the 32 total people involved with the highest being 59. The reason I think this happened is that every number was repeated once or twice. This is obviously pretty odd, and I would brush it off as spam or a prank but the fact that the same numbers were registered as being in the same call multiple times and that this caused there to be over the 32 person limit makes me think this is more than that. Anyone else have this issue or know anything about it?

I'm getting these MASS facetime calls... I don't know any of the numbers, but they're all my area code.

I picked up once and saw some people talking and hung up immediately.

I have no idea what this is and they won't stop.

How TF do I make it stop? 😩

this happened to me a few hours ago only a little more unnerving than what I’ve read so far. I received a call from three people, two with my cities area code and the other from a city downstate. Didn’t answer it, then called them back individually (no one picked up) and texted “who is this?” I know it was probably a bad idea but it seriously could have been anyone. One replied with “wrong number”, the other just sounded confused and asked me twice who I was, and one inquired if it was me, as in knew my first name and wanted to know if this was my number. Freaky. I got two more FT calls, this time a different set but still a group of 3. One of them was a number almost identical to my own, but that number that knew my name was on all the calls. Whatever is going on these aren’t just random spam calls.

When you look up your phone number on whitepages, does it say it has information about your age, name, location, etc.? I'm wondering if maybe it's a trend right now to get on group facetimes with your friends and try and prank call people by knowing their personal information. That being said, @Arobless (who posted a reply below yours) said that a little girl knew their information, and I feel like someone that young wouldn't even know about whitepages.

I got a trail for beenverified and not only is my personal info out there, but my family’s personal info/numbers as well. Everything short of card number and social, address and age, name etc. Even the make and model of my car and how much I paid for it is up for grabs. Did a reverse lookup on the numbers as well and without going into crazy detail it definitely points to spam. Just a thought, but how hard would it be to track and target a spammer when your getting a call from 35 different phone numbers at once?

Also, what @Arobless mentioned about a little girl on the other line has me scratching my head...I’d be willing to wager that it’s some kind of trend, it doesn’t exactly take a rocket scientist to get personal info especially if all your friends know how to do it, but it’s obvious after doing a little digging that the spammers that called me were just that...reused or old numbers, a phone carrier known and affiliated with spam calls etc. It seems unlikely that the two are related. If it’s a growing trend perhaps the spammers are taking advantage?

Happening to me, I was planning on going to sleep and I got a facetime call from 4 numbers I don’t have a contact for, all from my area code. At first the time obvious was it was one of the group chats I participate in for school that I don’t have most of the numbers added for and they like to send facetime calls a lot, but then after looking closely I realized these numbers have no connections to me anywhere.

I ended up just blocking them all and it stopped as well as texting a few people asking if they had similar experiences, none have had one.

I haven’t picked up since it’s around 1 AM and I figure if it’s a call center or something of the sort I best just block them all to let my family sleep

I think I’ve got your answer, I’ve read almost every thread and people either get this or a wall with paintings.

IP addresses are public locations, which could be one reason, but they normally lead to only very brief areas, like just a middle of a country, a state, a town, or in my case a street.

If not this, I have been getting these calls all from my area code, which could mean someone found me in a phone book.

If still not this, go onto a website called “I have been pwned” and type in your email, it could be a data breach, this happened just a few days after my email was affected in a large breach.

If not this, it could be a result of the fact you can actually find fairly precise coordinates in an image on say snapchat, whatsapp, discord, my recommendation for this is to turn off the Camera setting for these apps.

We don’t know much but with the surge of large data breaches this year it could be a result— you should also turn off FT for the time being and block the numbers.

This just happened to me as well around 12:30am PST tonight. Got an incoming FaceTime call and didn't recognize the number right away so i declined it. Went to my call log to look and the strange thing is I noticed there was an outgoing call from me to this number at 7:39pm earlier in the evening, as well as an outgoing FaceTime call from me to them 4 minutes later. I know for a fact i did not dial these nor did i accidentally butt dial or anything. Right away that raised a flag and freaked me out a bit. Suddenly I started getting FaceTime calls over and over from the same number but this time with 3 other numbers that I didn't recognize, just like everyone in here has stated. I then googled the number and it hit me....the original number that facetimed me was an old phone number of someone I know, it even still shows their name associated with the number when you Google it. I called the number back but i went straight to vm. Then they text me asking "who are you"? When I explained I did not make the calls, they kept trying to tell me to join the FaceTime so we can figure this out. I kept saying nope, then they said the name of the person i know who had that old number and asked me "does the name xxxx xxxxx ring a bell"?. It unnerved me for a bit at first and I'm not sure why they brought up the name or what the purpose of this scam is but that was it for me and I blocked the number as well as the other numbers in the FaceTime call. They started blowing up my FaceTime still on my MacBook so i signed out of FaceTime and so far that has solved it. I went the extra step of changing my iCloud password as well as updating my iPhone and MacBook OS, just as a precaution because the missed outgoing calls showing up in my call log is still very strange to me. It is definitely a scam of some sort and the fact that everyone here is getting these calls in the middle of the night makes sense because that means most likely the scammers are on the other side of the world doing this during the day. Just be careful everyone and do not answer. Block them as well and if you get any weird call log activity, be safe and change your iCloud password as a precaution. Hope this helps and hope this isn't a new form of scamming like the IRS scam calls or the car warranty expiration scam calls lol

I’m sick of this. It started last week Sunday at 11pm. Random Group FaceTime calls and hasn’t stopped. I may delete ALL of my iCloud and switch to Android as there seems ro be no way to remove myself from the groups. There’s one email address amongst the callers. I’ve blocked it and every number. I’ve also reported ALL of the numbers to my Verizon call filter but I still can’t drop them. It’s absurd ro me rest people can scam call all hours of the night and there’s nothing g I can do about it. None of these people are in my contacts and I’m scared that one of mt kids answers it when they’re playing on my iPad etc. Major major security glitch and makes me super uncomfortable that weirdos are continuously video calling. Even more uncomfortable that Apple can’t get to grips with it. I’m going phone shopping for androids this week cause one week of this is enough for me. It’s a toral violation of my privacy

Hi! Yes I know I am from 2021 😂, but I have been experiencing this problem for the past two days. The call woke me up from my nap and so I finally answered bc I thought it was one of my friends with a prank call. I immediately left when I realized I knew no one in the group, but it appeared to be a young girl with a bun and glasses, another guy speaking weird with his camera off, and a bunch of anonymous contacts not active. I was really scared so I checked the contacts and over 30 people were on the chain. I blocked every single one, and yes along the way I began to realize repeating numbers that would already say I blocked them. I am one to get nervous around things like these because of hackers, creepers, etc. so I am really glad I didn’t show my face. Though I do find it odd as well that the number would ring 2 times, as well they would call me at 2 am too. I went right to google and wrote “why are unknown Group FaceTime’s calling me constantly” and luckily I found this Apple page with your exact response that was matching my problems. — If Apple sees this, I think you should take a look because I find what’s happening very strange.
