Panic - Watchdog Timeout: no checkins from watchdogd in 185 seconds

Most of the time I reboot my MBP 15-inch Mid 2014 with macOS Catalina 10.15.3 I get this... I tried PRAM and SCM reset but it comes back.

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f88f3aaae): watchdog timeout: no checkins from watchdogd in 185 seconds (719 totalcheckins since monitoring last enabled), shutdown in progress

As a follow up, this was fixed for me with the August 12 10.15.6 supplemental update, as mentioned here https://www.macrumors.com/2020/08/12/apple-releases-macos-10-16-5-supplemental-update/. Note that this update is different from just '10.15.6'... it seems Apple doesn't like to increment minor numbers and is still calling this 10.15.6 supplement update.

Continued running caffeinate again yesterday and NO crashes, however I did notice during past crashes that there was a sound stream error right before the issue would occur.

So yesterday, I did not use the Mac for any Mac based calls. Sound output is fine but thinking it may have to do with sound input, like using the Microphone.

I was using Gen 2 AirPods but switched to AirPods Pro’s yesterday.

I am going to try to reproduce today and see if I can pin down the cause of my issue.

macOS 10.15.6 introduced a bug in App Sandbox that literally kills virtualization software causing a memory leak followed by a watchdog timeout kernel panic once kexts are loaded into the system.

If you're using such apps like VMware Fusion and VirtualBox I strongly encourage you to avoid installation and wait for a supplemental update addressing the issue.

I've been getting the same panic every few days too. I'm on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) (no external display) and 10.15.2

I've managed to keep the panic to every few days by running:

caffeinate -u -d -s

I tried leaving out the '-d' so that the display could sleep, after this had stopped it panicking for three days, but it panicked again a day later, so I put it back.

For what it's worth, I've attached my most recent panic log:

Same here - I am running a 2017 MacBook Pro with 2 27" Apple Thunderbolt monitors and am not using Time Machine for backup. I did recently apply the Catalina 10.15.6 update and now am seeing a Kernal Panic from a watchdog timeout causing the machine to freeze and die.

perhaps this is common but when I look at the backtrace the issue appears in the AppleSMC driver.

I am not going to reinstall the OS because that will take way to long and will be tedious, so I just went into the Energy saver config and disabled the monitor and disks from going to sleep to see if that is the cause.

I'll try to keep you posted.

Thanks.

Same issue on both of my Macbook Pro 16"s.... Start happening about a week ago, so probably in-line with a recent update.

Macbook crashes every time it goes to sleep. Using caffeinate, or a wrapper around it (such as Keeping You Awake), keeps the issue at bay as it stops sleeping. I use an external monitor which might relate.

Please test your updates at Apple before sending them out to everyone. I shouldn't have to hard reboot every time a $2000 laptop goes to sleep.
