The 2nd gen doesn't run apps, just preset content sent via server. When Amazon released a server version of their app it was only for the 3rd gen.
The 3rd gen, like the 2nd only runs content via server.
I can confirm that the app does output at 5.1 but if it isn't working on your system then you should contact Amazon as perhaps the server version is being problematic.
The Netflix, HBO Go and Showtime Anytime apps all broadcast audio in 5.1, but the Amazon app only seems to broadcast in ProLogic...
No problem. Yes it supports DD 5.1
thanks so much for taking the time to reply. My apologies again for using the incorrect term "apps" to describe how I access content from different providers via my Apple TV. As I mentioned, when viewing content from Netflix, HBO Go, Showtime Anytime, etc. the audio output is 5.1 DD (both via HDMI and optical out). Not so with content from Amazon. For some reason, that's only Pro Logic. Weird. I will definitely contact Amazon. Stay safe and have a nice day.
No need to apologize, I was just clarifying so as to avoid confusion. That makes sense, i'm sure you have also noticed Netflix and others have also been degrading video quality. It's an inconvenience but necessary to make sure those working from home are not penalized. Same to you, we will all get through this together. Have a great day!
My apologies, I meant the 3rd generation Apple TV
Just chatted with Amazon. They have degraded the broadcast audio quality of their content on some devices to take the strain off the internet due to the high demand for their streaming services given the impact of the Coronavirus.
