airplay displays off - no option to turn on

I am trying to set up the ability to connect to airplay via the top menu bar.

Considering what is written below - what else do I need to do to add the ability to connect to Airplay via an icon in the menu bar?

I am running Mojave.

I have gone into system preferences>displays.

I have ticked the box that says 'Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available.

However the drop down menu within system preferences>displays says that Airplay Display is OFF and does not have an option to switch it on.

There is an airplay device on and available.

When I go to System Preferences>sound the existence of an airplay device is confirmed

AppleBrianJones,

Thanks for testing a new user account. Since the same issue is occurring there, the next step would be reinstalling macOS: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery.

While data loss occurring through a reinstall would be rare, I would advise having a backup: Back up your Mac with Time Machine.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Hi AppleBrianJones,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help with AirPlay on your Mac today. I can point you to an article that may help: If AirPlay or screen mirroring isn’t working on your device.

Have you tested with any other AirPlay devices?

If the article doesn't resolve the issue, then testing inside a new user account is the next step: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. This can help isolate the issue to your user account or system-wide.

Let me know how it goes.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi Becky,,

Thanks for your suggestions.

  • I only have one AirPlay device to test this with. - it is an AirPort Express (2nd generation)
  • The firmware on the AirPort express is up to date.
  • The problem isn't that AirPlay isn't working - it it that the shortcut in the menu at the top of the screen is not seeing that there is an airplay device available.
  • I just tested this with another user account and the same thing is happening with that other account.
  • I am able to connect to airplay by going into system preferences - but this is laborious.

Any other ideas?
