Split screen won’t close

How do I close split screen on iPad purchased in 2017. AND how do I get rid of the favorites bar on left side of screen?

I want to permanently turn off split screen on my iPad mini. I use the mini to read books, and turning the page too often results in a second screen that needs to be closed. Split screen should be an OPTION that the user can turn off!
