My audio keeps changing back and forth between my monitor and laptop

Hello,

I have a 2019 Macbook Air and a BENQ monitor that I run separately.

My monitor keeps stealing the audio out of nowhere and then it will flip back and forth between my computer speakers and the monitor speakers a bunch of times in quick succession, usually landing back on the laptop at the end. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can make it stop happening?

It will happen out of nowhere, like I'm in the middle of a video call and it just starts happening.

I've tried setting my laptop as the primary monitor in display preferences and running <sudo killall coreaudiod> in terminal (a developer told me to try it), and neither worked.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi skkid,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue with your external monitor and the audio. I'll be happy to do what I can to help.

It sounds like you've set up your external monitor correctly, but here's the article in case you want to double check: Use external monitors with your Mac

I'd suggest trying a different cable, if you're able to. If you have another monitor to test with, that would help to isolate the issue also.

Then contact the monitor manufacturer and let them know what's happening. They may have a firmware update, or some other solution.

Take care!
