Giving iPhone to son, wanna wipe but don’t wanna lose AppleCare+

So my wife and I just upgraded to the iPhone 11’s and our son is still on the seven. I have an XR that I upgraded from and would like to give it to him. I’m going to wipe the phone by erasing everything after I sign out of my Apple ID of course but I’m afraid That he won’t be able to activate the AppleCare when he signed in with his Apple ID. He has AppleCare plus on his seven currently so I don’t know what’s going to happen I’m so confused with that...

My main question is: Will he be able to activate AppleCare+ on the XR when he gets it???

So I’m happy to report but the AppleCare stayed with the device. Idk how.?.

I signed out of my Apple ID and checked the system info and it didn’t show any AppleCare info, so I wiped everything (Erase All Contents and Settings) which completed fully.

I then started from scratch and signed in with his Apple ID and restored from a backup.

I then proceeded to check the system info again to see if I needed to re update the software since I wiped the iPhone and that’s where I noticed the AppleCare info!

I dunno if it’s bc we’re in the same family, his Apple ID and my wife’s is attached to mine in that family thing and the AppleCare charge gets deducted from my credit card.

Either way I’m happy that it’s still there.

AppleCare is tied to the device, not the owner. That’s why pre-paid AppleCare plan can be transferred to the new owner of that device. If you’re paying monthly, you just cancel your subscription; there’s nothing to transfer.

Your can’t transfer AppleCare from one device to a different device.
