Create, Delete and Rename iCloud Account

Hi All,

I am new to Apple/iPhone and my first surprise shock is that majority of the users do not fully understand the difference between Apple ID and iCLoud ID

When I set up my mobile, I created an icloud account (xxx@icloud.com) and then I create an apple id (yyy@gmail.com). I understand that I could've userd xxx@icloud.com to create an Apple ID however, I would like to keep these both separate so that backups go to icloud.com and for payments and ets I use gmail.com

My questions are:

  1. If I reset the mobile and give my mobile to someone else, can they sill create another iCloud.com id for example zzz@iCloud.com when setting up the mobile ?
  2. If I buy another Apple device will my quota of 5GB increase to 10GB as I will have two devices? If not, it would make sense to have two iCLoud accounts and split the files across
  3. How to rename xxx@icloud.com to xax@icloud.com - I don't mind even if I have to delete xxx@icloud.com permanently and create xax.com from the scratch. But the point is that if I can create another iCloud ID by resetting the mobile then what is the point to delete the existing ID anyway.

Look forward to your help on these please

Many thanks, Bava Jee

Hello Bava_Jee,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you have several Apple ID related questions; I'd like to help.

To answer your first question, if you ever decide to give your iPhone to another person you would simply sign out of your Apple ID on the iPhone and the iPhone can then be used by someone else.

Your second question is about the free 5 GB of storage Apple provides free. Your account is given 5gb free, not your device. Purchasing another device will not increase the storage. You can however purchase more storage. This article explains more about iCloud pricing:

With regard to your question about changing your iCloud email address, this article should help:

Specifically, check out the section labeled "When you use your @icloud.com email address"

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

Bava_Jee,

Thanks for getting back to us. To answer your first question, if you sign out of one iCloud account and into another they both would have the same limited number of photos and data. The new account would not pick up where the other account left off. There is no advantage to having 2 accounts, not to mention, you can only sync to one account a time.

As far as your question of sharing an Apple ID with your family, this is not recommended. if you have a shared Apple ID, everyone that sings into that Apple ID would have the same data, including the same contacts, messages, etc. A better option would be to set up Family Sharing. You can read more about this here:

Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

My recommendation is to not worry about multiple ID's. There is no advantage in having multiple ID's, and it can become quite confusing. I recommend you set up one Apple ID (one iCloud account) and then if you want to share apps and other data with your family, set up Family Sharing. If you run out of storage space with the free 5 GB, you can purchase additional storage, and it's very inexpensive:

Bava_Jee,

If you have not downloaded anything with either Apple ID, you can simply choose to stop using one or the other. This article provided some additional details:

Understand and control the personal information that you store with Apple - Apple Support

If you have downloaded some content using one of the ID's, that would be the ID you will want to keep because you can't transfer connect between ID's.

There is no real advantage to using an ID with your Gmail account versus and ID with the iCloud account, it just has to be a real email address.

At the same time, you can keep both ID's and continue to use them in the way you originally set them up, there just is no advantage in doing this.

Have a great day.

Thank very much for the reply but it has not helped!

To answer your first

question, if you ever decide to give your iPhone to another person you would

simply sign out of your Apple ID on the iPhone and the iPhone can then be used

by someone else.

Your second question is about

the free 5 GB of storage Apple provides free. Your account is given 5gb free,

not your device. Purchasing another device will not increase the storage. You

can however purchase more storage. This article explains more about iCloud

pricing:

Assuming iCloud can only be created when someone has an

Apple device, what if I sign out of iPhone and reset it by creating another ID?

In theory, it will give me a new iCloud account with 5GB storage. I understand

that my photos or etc will be split across two accounts but somehow it will get

me additional storage.

On the point of changing iCloud ID, I’ve read the article at

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667

It says” When you turn on iCloud

email and choose your @icloud.com email address, your new @icloud.com email is

assigned to your Apple ID as a login alias.”  Does it mean that I cannot keep them separate

? Why do they need to be merged together? What if I want to have an Apple ID

that can be shared with my other family members and is used for App purchases and

iCloud ID only for backups?

My question was how can I

just get a new iCloud iD or rename it. If it requires deleting everything then

I can do that too

Can you help, please?

Thanks very much for the reply. I've noted the point that it is a better option to set up family sharing .

I will much appreciate if you can also help me with the following

  1. How to permanently delete my iCloud email id, including all the data ?
  2. How to backup all my settings to my PC before I delete the account?
  3. If I create a new iCLoud account and use it for App Store then will it be a good practice and what are the disadvantages of having *gmail Apple ID for purchases adn *iCloud ID for photo backups - can they just not be kept complete separate?

Many thanks
