Can my 21.5" (2013) iMac by extended to another (non Apple) external display monitor?

Can my 21.5" (2013) iMac screen by extended to another external display monitor so that I effectively have 2 screens. If so how do I do this in terms of which ports and connection cables should I use?

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.15

Some connections methods like HDMI require an adapter, others like DisplayPort only require a cable.

For the Apple recommended adapter:

Many third party Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters will also work, but you need to check the spec's for compatibility.

Yes, 2nd Display Support:Dual/Mirroring*2nd Max. Resolution:2560x1600 (x2)

Details:*This model can simultaneously support two external displays up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt.

This model is equipped with two Thunderbolt ports. Thunderbolt is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI). It also can support other peripherals that use the Thunderbolt standard, which provides a maximum theoretical 10 Gbps of bandwidth in both directions.

So it depends what inputs are on the Monitor, so MDP to HDMI or such. :)
