Can my 21.5" (2013) iMac screen by extended to another external display monitor so that I effectively have 2 screens. If so how do I do this in terms of which ports and connection cables should I use?

So the display monitor can take HDMI, VGA, etc. Does that mean if I simply get a cable with Thunderbolt connector at one end and HDMI (for example) at the other end, I can extend my iMac screen to the external display to create s secondary screen?
