Imovie 10.1.14 Freezes When Rendering

Hi, I have used iMovie for many years and never experienced this before. I have an iMac from late 2015 with a 4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB. I have a 3 TB HD with about 800 GB free.

A few months ago iMovie started freezing when I would go to render (not sure if that's the right term but when I go to process the new movie I've edited to file). The progress meter in the upper right corner just never moves and eventually I have to force quit iMovie.

However, if after I've edited the movie I quit iMovie and open it back up again and then try to create the movie it generally works.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi, Ed,

It could be a corrupt preference causing that. Try deleting preferences. To delete preferences, open iMovie while

holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in

the box that appears.  iMovie will open in a new library.  Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.

Another thing that you can try is to boot up in Safe Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately reboot in normal mode. Sometimes that clears up conflicts that cause misbehaviors.

Try sharing out from a newly created file to rule out the possibility that the issue is confined to just one project.
