Safari Passwords

Upgraded to Catalina, became a disaster on a 2012 mini.Now after completely restoring back to High Sierra, in Safari Preferences, under passwords key, my admin password is rejected.

Cannot change password Why, regardless of the browser I use, am I unable to set my password to a randomly generated string of 16 characters, including upper- and lower-case alphabetical, numeric, and even a special character? I keep getting a message stating that "an unknown error occurred" when using a web browser on my Macbook; I started with Safari and then tried Brave and Chrome, but all had the exact same issue.

Change or reset the password of a macOS user account - Apple Support.
