Apps keep restarting in iOS 13.4

I have an iPhone 7 running on iOS 13.4. I do a lot of multitasking on my phone and frequently have to switch between apps. I’ve been finding recently that whenever I return to an app, even when I’ve only been away from it for a few seconds, it always restarts and I end up losing all my work or research. Is there a setting I can change to fix this problem? Do do I just need to wait for Apple to resolve it in future versions of iOS?
