iCloud password reset impossible
I’m trying to reset my iCloud password but it just asks me to enter a phone number I no longer have access to? There is no alternatives to resetting and the support page is less than helpful.

The entire process is here... you need Apple's Account Recovery.

This does not require access to the original trusted phone number, but you need to know it.
You are correct in saying that if you do not know that phone number, recovery is impossible. Otherwise I could recover your account by knowing a common email address of yours and making a calculated guess it is also your Apple ID and compromise your account.
