I am trying to password protect a pdf, so I went to export, clicked encrypt and entered a password, and I just get the message 'Document X.pdf could not be exported as Document X'. I've tried renaming the document but keep getting the same error message.

Have you tried exporting with the Export menu, not the Export as PDF menu?
Where are you exporting to? If to the Desktop try to an external HD if you have one or to the Documents folder. Any difference?
Are you able to save other files/documents to the Desktop?
