Software update permissions denied

permissions denied when trying to update to Catalina. Tried to reset permissions through utility tool from the instructions on apple website, didn't work

Permission Settings Hi, Since installing Catalina, I'm unable to change the permissions settings in Get Info for my main hard drive. I'm able to unlock it, but when I select Read & Write, I get a pop up that I don't have permission. There is only one account on the computer. When I open Users & Accounts in the System Prefs, I see "Allow user to administer this computer" is checked, but grayed out (maybe because only one account). I tried the terminal command recommended in another thread here on this forum, and it clearly ran the process, but upon restarting, the problem still exists. I tried to fix permissions in Disk Utility, but when I open the app, it just shows information without any options to do anything. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you!

Permission denied when updating to big sur I'm trying to update to Big Sur, because I thought it would help fix an issue with my contacts. But when I got to install it I get an error saying I don't have permissions. I've tried on three separate admin accounts, one made just for this. And still got the same error when I went to the get info part for the drive labeled Macintosh it says admins are read only and only the system has read and write. I also went into my settings and made sure the install big sur app had permissions. I'm not sure what else to try.

It looks like you're trying to update to macOS Catalina but are running into an error that says "The operation couldn’t be completed. Permission denied." I'd like to help you get this resolved.

Before taking any further troubleshooting steps I recommend backing up your Mac if you haven't done so recently: How to back up your Mac. It's always good to have a recent backup to ensure your data is safe. After that boot your Mac into safe mode and try updating your Mac there: How to use safe mode on your Mac. If the same thing happens in safe mode, reinstall macOS using these steps: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery.
