Is it just me or is Disk Utility just broken?

I wanted to format a 256gb external SSD to use as an installation media but after 5 try’s, errors each time, it finally formatted. But when I try to put any files on to the thing it takes a very long time sometimes like 1 to 2 hours for a 1gb file to a drive on thunderbolt 3! Also the read/write light is always blinking.

Are there any fixes? If not, then are there any alternatives?

Did you run the First Aid on that Drive—it sounds like it has an issue/ or failing.
