Unable to update Mac due to 102 error code

my Macbook pro with operating system OS X version 10.8.5 with processor 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, I was trying to download updates but it downloads to a certain level and stops giving me error 102. I dont know how to start trouble shooting this kind of problem.

I have tried reinstalling the OS with no success either.

Due to my inability to fix this issue, I can't upgrade my OS which is a prerequisite for downloading the latest version of XCode from the Mac Store.

You can upgrade to High Sierra and then to Catalina if your software supports it.

No reason to attempt anything older unless you must develop for an older system.

See the tips starting with Sierra and see which one fits your needs the best:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-12081- 10.13 High Sierra

El Capitan, 10.11, can typically only be upgrade to from 10.6.8, although some have succeeded with in between operating systems.
