Hide or group active Apps on Dock.

Hello all,

Is there a way to hide all the currently opened apps from the dock?

In prior versions, opened apps were represented with a dot under the icon (I still have that), but now, in addition, on the far right each and every app or web page I open shows its own icon. So with each opened app or web page my dock grows smaller and smaller to accommodate.

Before anyone responds, this is *not* about disabling recently opened apps, i've already done that. This issue is for all currently opened apps.

Just to be clearer, If I have 3 MS word documents open, I will have 3 word icons representing each document. Likewise, if I have multiple tabs in chrome or firefox, I will have an icon on the dock for each.

Ironically, it does not do this for native apple apps.

This is a fresh install of catalina as my upgrade from mojave was quirky.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you have "Minimize windows into application icon" set in Dock Preferences. With that unchecked, I think I am seeing what you describe.

Otherwise, I don't know why you are seeing what you do.

Thank you for explaining your issue so clearly. No, you should not see several Word icons on the dock. Just one icon for each open app, which will have a black dot below it. Not knowing the exact cause, I would begin by suggesting that you go through the standard trouble shooting steps: Try restarting your computer to see if that helps. If not, then restart it in the safe mode by pressing the shift key at startup. That often fixes a number of issues and can take up to ten minutes while fixing is being done. If these steps don't work, please let us know and something else can be tried.

Thanks MrHoffman, my original post said that this has nothing to do with *recent applications*. These are *active* applications.

**Unless you'r implying that setting should also disable seeing actively opened apps as well.

Regardless, I have toggled that switch prior and it works as expected (for recent applications) NOT currently opened.

thx again
