Playing MP4 video files on iPhone

I can't get MP4 files to play on an iPhone. Similarly, if I transfer a MOV file recorded on the phone to external storage and then try to play it on the phone, it won't play. I am amazed that Apple allows a video recorded on a phone not to be played on the same phone. Any suggestions?

video only exports about 25% of it's length... Hey All, i've been exporting a music video and after the 5th pass or so now, the video is only exporting a maximum of 1:33. the total length is around 5 minutes. Ive checked all preferences, settings, etc. Any ideas why this is happening? For reference im exporting to "Apple Devices 720" . Mainly so i can view and share primarily on iPhone as a demo. Are you trying to play it directly from external storage? The phone will play a MOV if it resides in storage on the phone. For MP4 you will need to download an app that supports MP4.
