I can't get MP4 files to play on an iPhone. Similarly, if I transfer a MOV file recorded on the phone to external storage and then try to play it on the phone, it won't play. I am amazed that Apple allows a video recorded on a phone not to be played on the same phone. Any suggestions?

Are you trying to play it directly from external storage? The phone will play a MOV if it resides in storage on the phone. For MP4 you will need to download an app that supports MP4.
