Music on Catalina has been a disaster for me

Since upgrading to Catalina, Music has trashed my iTunes library I spent many years building up and curating. It lost a bunch of my playlists while creating multiple duplicates of others (which aren't even accurate duplicates).

Songs appear as duplicates... but if i delete one it deletes both songs from my library.

My library is full of _hundreds_ of playlists with no names which seem to just have a random collection of songs. Deleting a playlist is a one by one process which means it'll take me ages to try to clean them up.. but what's the point since new ones are created _daily_.

Songs I add to my library sometimes get uploaded to iCloud Music, sometimes not.. with them getting stuck as Waiting and with no way to force it to happen.

It also insists on downloading hundreds of random songs to my machine which causes me to run out of disk space even though I repeatedly tell it not to download them.

Surely I'm not the only person going through this? I'm at my wits end.

I'm probably going to jinx things, but about 2-3 weeks ago I:

  • made a copy of all the songs that hadn't been uploaded to iCloud music (some 4 hour mixes etc)
  • exported all my actual remaining playlists (as opposed to the hundreds Music had decided to create)
  • deleted all of the playlists (which took forever as you have to do it one by one)
  • waited for a while to make sure the changes got synced to my iPhone and iPad
  • signed out of my account in Music on my mac, and quit
  • deleted the whole Music directory from my mac
  • launched Music and signed back in
  • imported the playlists i had saved
  • added the songs that can't be uploaded to iCloud music

since then everything has been fine.. no random empty playlists showing up, no actual playlists disappearing, no duplicate songs appearing etc.. a i say, i've probably jinxed it now, but hey.

Ziggmike -- it might be related to what I have been experiencing -- are you sure they are dups and not split albums housing the tracks after you played them? Here's my issue...

I purchased a new MacBook Pro in January... out of the box on Catalina... After hours and hours (and to date 4 months), I have gotten to the executive team support. We've recorded the issue... engineering has been able to re-create the issue. They seem to know what the issue is and that it does exist.

The issue as it seems is that changing any metadata and then playing a track will create an issue (sometimes you have to leave the Music app before it explodes your album). It seems that this is also related to missing artwork. I've stopped using my Music app completely because it's wrecking my library.

The good news... they know the issue exists now. The bad news... my executive rep can't commit to when the issue will be resolved. Great experience with them after reaching the executive team and in working to identify the issue, but now it's up to me to wait and see if and when it is resolved. So basically kicked to the curb with no commitment from them to follow up with me unless engineering needs more info. IMO it should've never made it through beta testing.

I'm hopeful that the update will happen in the next iOS update, but there has only been one of those in the four months I've owned the newest laptop. I would urge you to contact the executive team and report the issue -- I emailed Mr. Cook (once) and Mr. Federighi (twice) before being contacted.

To see the issue in action, simply change the name of any album (add an extra word to the end to make it easy to find). Play tracks off the newly named album... exit the app.... wait for awhile... and ta-da your stuff should be jacked up when you enter the app again.

As you can guess, with over 12000 album titles, I'm kinda cranky about the mess!

Yea --- so, this has happened to me once already about 3 months ago. I had to go and restore a previous library (which given the change from iTunes to MUSIC, the tutorials online are not 100% applicable anymore) and the two things that really irked me was

  1. I had to go searching within my media folder for the new music that I've added since the last back up which was like finding a needle in a haystack. In other words, I still had the songs, it just wasn't reflected in the playlists. Eventually out of fear that I might miss one, I had to basically drag and drop ALL my songs back into MUSIC .. but in batches because the bulk transfer would always end up skipping a song or two so in between batch transfers, I had to double check the file count. #NIGHTMARE
  2. and yes, there was an issue with duplicates which I ended up having to delete and double check each time.

BUT I SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST.

  1. Just within the last 3-4 days (It's April 8) my library has disappeared again. And I'm frantically searching for a fix but I fear that I will have to do the entire process I described above again.
