In System Preferences on Mac, I cannot login with my Apple ID due to "An unknown error occurred" after I enter my password and submit. However, I can log in with the same username/password on the website.

This was fixed after:
1) I tried signing out of my Apple ID in System Preferences, but it didn't complete. A spinner continued for several minutes.
2) Then, I restarted my computer. Now, my other devices showed up in System Prefs.
3) Then, I entered my password again.
Yay, it works!

If this is when trying to sign into iCloud, some people have solved this by going to System Preferences/Internet Accounts, selecting an iCloud account there, and signing in. You need to repeat this for each iCloud account.
