Open your Safari browser to click on the link, do not use Firefox,

this has probably been mentioned several times in this thread.

How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Apple Support

Go to Section 4 and click on Get macOS High Sierra you will be redirected

to the App Store High Sierra page. It should say Get or Download.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ then it is detecting a previous download of the install app

go to the Applications folder locate Install macOS High Sierra.app.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart, click on the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

Note the date on the screenshot.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.

Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.

https://roaringapps.com

Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

Connect your mac to your router via cable rather than rely on WiFi.

Do not use your mac while it is downloading

and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.

Hi, J0n3,

I’m sorry this has been such a frustrating experience so far, but I think this may be a matter of pointing you at a better document.

My previous reply was actually to Billy_Ray, and may have led you astray, or at least been incomplete for your needs.  I hadn’t replied to you yet because I was still trying to understand your situation better, and the additional replies, both your’s and BDAqua’s, have helped me, I believe.

What leads me to this is that I was a bit mystified about what you are saying about executing “the PKG inside the DMG”, which I don’t believe is a step you should be doing.  The steps I iterate below result in a “.app” file being downloaded, not a “.dmg”.

Given that you are rewriting your old Mac from scratch, I believe you actually should be looking at the document for “How to create a bootable installer”, which I had mentioned previously, but you can find at

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Briefly summarizing, using Safari on your 2018 Big Sur Mac, the object is to get to the App Store using the appropriate “Download macOS” link in the “create” doc.  From the App Store, click “GET” and then you will be asked to download the High Sierra OS.  Proceed with download and a file named “Install macOS High Sierra.app” will appear in your Applications folder.  Note, typically, once the download completes, a window will pop open asking you to “click Continue” to install High Sierra, BUT you don’t want to do that.  Instead, “Quit” out of that install window.  Then you just need to follow the remaining instructions in the “create bootable installer” document to create the image on the USB drive.  Using the USB drive on your old Mac is described in the 2nd half of the “create” document.

I captured the following screen data of some of the basic process, though in my example, I downloaded Mojave since I already had High Sierra on my Mac.

App Store:

After click on "GET":

Once OS is located:

After "Download" clicked and the download process has completed:

Finally, the Applications folder:

I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air and was trying to upgrade from macOS Sierra 10.12.6 to High Sierra. I had some copies of High Sierra 10.13.3 in various places, including on external drives, but when I tried to open them, I got errors that they were damaged. I couldn't download High Sierra from the App Store, even from a link from the official Apple support site. I tried Chrome and Safari. In Safari, I saw the "Get" button, but it was greyed out and wouldn't do anything. After reading this thread, I looked for all the Install macOS High Sierra.app files and trashed them, and emptied the trash. Then I was able to download High Sierra 10.13.6 from the App Store. I downloaded it via wifi without a problem, even though I have an older AirPort Extreme router and internet speed is not great, max 20 mbps. The install went smoothly.

Don't use FireFox for this link…

https://itunes.apple.com/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12

If you get a corrupted message...

Naw, not damaged, it's just that you have an old copy already in Applications, there are 2 cures...

Disconnect from the Internet & set the Date back to 2014, then you can run the Install MacsOS High Sierra App in Applications, so expired Certificates are not expired.

Or... trash the Install MacsOS High Sierra.app in Applications then a new copy more recent version can be downloaded.

It took me awhile to figure out how to rebuild the OS on my MacBook Pro, but I found some useful tips earlier in this thread that got me through it. I suggest reviewing Eau Rouge's replies on Sept. 7, 2020 (or also on Jun 27, 2020 5:07 AM) for a full explanation. Briefly, you must use Safari to review this discussion thread and then use the Apple Support doc "How to upgrade to ... " link that is in Eau's reply. And as long as you are using Safari when reading the support doc that Eau directs you to, when you click the link in the 4th section for the macOS High Sierra installer, another Safari window will open and this will separately cause an Apple Store window to open for the High Sierra download, like the one below. Eau explains what to do if the button you see is not "Get".

Also, since you are planning to do a full install of High Sierra from scratch, this requires the use of a bootable installer and you can check out the following link for some helpful information on how to create and then use the bootable installer. Let us know if there's anything further we can help with.

When you open the High Sierra page in the App Store, does it say 'Get' or 'Open'

if it says 'Open' then the App Store is detecting a copy or a partial copy of Install macOS High Sierra.app

in your Application folder. If you find it move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Connect your mac to your router via a cabled connection, not WiFi.

Restart your mac, go back to the App Store High Sierra page it should

now say 'Get' click on that to start the download.

Do not use the mac while it is downloading, do not use any other devices that share the same internet

connection while the mac is downloading.

Do not try through System Preferences> Software Download.

Open Safari, do not use Firefox and click on this link,

Go to Section 4 and click on Get macOS High Sierra.

This will redirect you to the App Store High Sierra page,

it should say 'Get' or 'Download'.

If it says 'Open' then the App Store is detecting a copy of the

Install macOS High Sierra.app in your Applications folder.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart your mac and try to download High Sierra again.
