Side bar wont go away in finder

I am not sure what this part of the finder is called but it's annoying and gets in the way when I want to search files. It takes half of the finders window, I can collapse it but for some reason when i go into another sub folder or anywhere else it pops back again. I have to collapse it every time I move in finder. I have tried restarting my MacBook Pro, I tried changing the viewing options in finder but nothing's working.

Change the view— for example list view is much more stream lined.

Did you try change the Finder window size by dragging the border one way or the other?

Did you try changing the icon size form the slider in the lower right

If you don't see, make changes to your options—Finder>View>Show Status bar
