App documents and data in iCloud

short question: if I am managing my apps and data in iCloud how do I access those documents? I click on an app and I see a list of files saved to iCloud, but I can’t find those when I log into iCloud on my desktop. Additionally I have done both iCloud and computer backups of my iPad.

Background: A few years back, when upgrading to iOS 10, there were plenty of developers who did not upgrade their apps for this new version. One of those was Sketchbook pro. Though they did not update, they created a whole new app called Autodesk sketchbook. I lost many drawings just because I was not aware that it would be an entirely new app and I wouldn’t be able to find my work.

I kind of gave up, And my daughter decided she wasn’t going to update her iPad.

now we are in the world of quarantine and home learning, and my daughter needs to update her iPad In order to use all of the apps required for distance learning. She has instead been using her iPhone because she doesn’t want to lose all of her drawings and work or the many apps that were never updated after iOS 10.

I have gone to the Sketchbook help page and they have many statements about how to import your old sketches to the new app. One of those states that you can get your data if your app was saved to iCloud. They also say if you backed up to your computer you should be able to find a folder with your iPad/iPhone backups and the then find the documents for each app. But I can’t find that folder. And I always back up my device to my computer before I update.

Hi PinkyandTheBrain03,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with your Sketchbook app and the apps saved documents and data. I'm certain these drawings are important and I can understand wanting to save them.

You wouldn't be able to find app content at iCloud.com. It would simply be saved in the backup to be retrieved on the new app. You best bet would be to work with Sketchbook support to find out how to import the data to the new app.

The same goes for backing up through your computer or iTunes. The app content will be in the backup, but not available separately: Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Have a fantastic weekend!

thanks for the feedback. But I still need more help.

I have reached out to sketch book on their support website. Since the new sketchbook pro is a completely different app, and not an update of the existing app, the documents do not get automatically brought over. And there is no way to find them on my iPad. I have the old app, but it will not even open. Therefore there is still no way to bring that data over to the new app.

I have documents on my iPad that I have not been able to look at because I can’t get them into the new app. I would love to get them back but at this point I consider them lost.

There are documents on my daughters iPad, that have not been locked yet because we haven’t updated her iOS. Any other ideas on how to save these documents prior to iOS update would be appreciated.
