Mid 2007 iMac trying to update for El Capitan

Hello, I have an old iMac that is currently running Snow Leopard I upgraded to 4gb of RAM but to be able to connect my iPhone or iPod I need to update my OS to update my iTunes. I am trying to update to El Capitan so that I can get the newer version of iTunes to backup my iPhone and iPod and to get the 1500 song and 15+ movies that are on it that I cannot transfer to my iPhone. iPhone XR. Does it require more upgrade than just the RAM?

Try installing it in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

Edit: I see OT already recommended that.

It might not help but as I recall the installer app has a menu "show installer log" or words to that effect. If I'm correct about it try enabling that option to determine the point at which it gets stuck.

another Edit: Window > Installer Log
