Ctrl + Backspace to "Delete and Move" on Macbook with no backspace key

Yes, I searched for this. Yes, I know Function + Backspace = Delete but that doesn't work in Garage Band when trying to "Delete and Move" to delete part of a clip and fill in the empty space. How do I do that?

While I'm asking ... how do I fill in empty space without dragging a clip if I'm not deleting anything (confession: I didn't search for that).

I'd like to add a little to the question, if I may.
I'm finding that the "delete and move" option is grey unless I've JUST saved the doc. If I save the doc I can see and select "delete and shuffle". But if I then highlight a region to "delete and shuffle" then go to the edit menu, "delete and move" is grey once again.
I'm on Garageband 9, on a new iMac. I figure I must be doing something wrong tool-wise perhaps? I've been podcasting for four years dragging the darn audio every time I remove an "um" (you can imagine...) and would SO love to be able to leave that all behind me.
Ideas?

Sorry, in the pdf instructions they say that the "delete and move" option "deletes and shuffles" (which they imply is a term common to audio folks...I sure wouldn't know) but they're effectively the same thing. When you select the "delete and edit" you delete the audio and it moves the audio to the right of the deletion back to link up with the audio to the left of the deletion.

It would be so lovely if I could get this to work.

Thank you,
Heather

Oh, and as a follow up to a previous post--I think ctrl-backspace isn't doing anything b/c the option at that point is greyed out in the menu. I've tried every combination I could think of (ctrl-backspace, cmmd-backspace, ctrl-shift-backspace, ctrl-opt-shift-backspace...etc) and nothing worked. ctrl-backspace works just fine in text-related programs, however.
Thank you!
Heather
