iPad Pro

All iPad Pro models support external displays. I personally use an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) with an Apple Cinema Display using a HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adapter. iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd and 4th generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch (1st and 2nd generation) use a USB-C port which allows for better external display support.

A limitation of iPad Pro models with the Lightning port is that you can either have a display or data adapter, you would not be able to use (for example) a USB hard disk and an external display at the same time. With iPad Pro models that have a USB-C port you could connect an external display and USB peripherals simultaneously.

Unfortunately you would not be able to use an iMac in Target Display Mode as it requires Thunderbolt. Here is my wiring setup for my iPad with an Apple Cinema Display:

iPad <-> Lightning to HDMI <-> HDMI to DVI <-> DVI to DisplayPort <-> DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort <-> Cinema Display

It is quite the string of adapters however it works pretty well! I especially love this setup when using Smart Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. I really wish that the Lightning bus supported display out and USB as I would love to connect the Cinema Display’s USB ports to the iPad while also using the external display. Several years down the line when I am looking to upgrade my iPad Pro this will work itself out as the USB-C port supports display out and data simultaneously.

I have a late 2009 iMac.

My iMac does NOT have Thunderbolt ports,at all. It uses a Mini Display port.

Thunderbolt connectors did not appear until the 2011 iMac models.

I betcha your setup would work for my iMac.
