Thanks. To remove a fingerprint read the instructions under You can also delete fingerprints in Use Touch ID on your Mac - Apple Support. Try that, then repeat the exercise.
After that I'm out of ideas.
I tried all options available. not rectified yet.

Unable to complete Touch ID enrolment.
Please go back and try again."
When cancel and go back I get
To add a new fingerprint, remove a fingerprint from any account on this Mac.
nothing happens after.
