Touch ID not working well on new MacBook Pro

Did it work previously?
System Preferences > Touch ID > Use Touch ID for:
Uncheck the box beside “Unlocking your Mac”.
Log out.
Log back in
Check the box beside “Unlocking your Mac”.
If this doesn’t help, reset SMC and then try performing the step posted above.

This is a new MacBook Pro and I did contact Apple Support. What I was advised to do was to delete my first Touch ID set-up and re-set it up. That has worked for now. We did not uncheck and then check the "Unlocking your Mac" button at all. Thank you for answering, but I didn't want to wait and contacted Apple Support immediately after asking the question in this forum.
