After the upgrade to Mac OS Ventura (13.0.1 now), the Touch ID no longer works for unlocking the screen for me. It works fine in other places.
I tried removing the fingerprint and adding a new one. That did not help.

Same here. After the upgrade to macOS Ventura, the touch ID is no longer available. I cannot even add it through Password & Touch ID screen in the system setting. Help us, Apple!
By the way, I own the new iMac with an M1. It didn't get fixed after the restart, and I cannot Add Fingerprint!
Running Ventura 13.0.1 on my MACbook PRO Laptop with Apple M1 Pro. Same here ... fingerprint recognition no longer working since updating to Ventura. Tried removing old fingerprint and adding new one ... nothing. Doesn't work when trying to re-activate my laptop nor when I am on Safari browser for websites. This OS is very quirky!!
Touch ID
A fingerprint recognition feature from Apple available on some Mac computers and some Magic Keyboard models. With Touch ID, you can unlock your Mac and some password-protected items, switch quickly between users, use Apple Pay to make purchases on the web, and purchase items from the iTunes Store, the App Store, and Apple Books.
Note: Touch ID on Magic Keyboard (available on some models) is only compatible with Mac computers with Apple silicon.
To set up Touch ID, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Touch ID & Password in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) To use Touch ID, place your finger on it.
For addition reading specific to Touch ID ➡️ which may assist in this matter Use Touch ID on Mac - Apple Support (CA)
For Apple Silicon M1 iMac ( Desktop ) with Touch ID Apple Keyboard
1 - Cable the Keyboard to computer with the supplied Apple Cable that came with the Keyboard and try again
2 - ( Un-cabled to computer ) Turn Off the Keyboard and pause 10 seconds and tun it Back On and try again.
For Apple Touch ID Laptop ( Intel )
1 - Perform an SMC Reset as per linked instruction Reset the SMC of your Mac and perform this action 3x consecutively
2 - Try Again
For Apple Touch ID enable Apple Silicon M1 / M2 computers
Shutdown computer completely. Pause 15 seconds and start the computer normally. This would be equal to an Intel SMC reset ( M1 / M2 ) do not have an SMC.

Update: after some erratic and unpredictable behavior, the malfunction of TouchID has stabilized as follows:
Touch & Passwords grayed out then substituted by Password on iMac M1 Ventura 13.3. No idea as to why or how the function failed and was removed.
Solution:
This intuitive solution solved the problem for me. Hopefully it will work for you.
Same here, I upgraded my mac to Ventura yesterday and suddenly, the TouchID is not working. I have spoken to the Apple Support guy via Chat, still can't resolve it. This is definitely a bug. Apple please get a hotfix asap!!
I had an issue with Touch ID -- it stopped working all of a sudden after an upgrade to Ventura 13.0.1
Upgrading to 13.1 fixed the issue, it's working again! Tho it took a couple of minute after the restart for option "Touch ID" to appear in the settings, but it work again for me. Clearly a bug.
Touch ID stopped working after OSX upgrade to Ventura 13.1 (Macbook Air 2020, Intel i7). I deleted and recorded fingers touch again, still did not work.
I see no one can solve it here. Perhaps Apple's developers can solve it?
I have 13.2 installed and this totally worked for me. Touch ID now works with my iMac after attaching the cable to the wireless keyboard. Thanks dude, this was the last resort otherwise I would have re-installed the previous OS.
I'm on 13.2 since upgrading yesterday (Mac Air M1), and Touch ID no longer works for User logins, though it still works fine inside a User for Apps, Apple ID login, etc. I have gone to Touch ID & Password and made sure it was on, but it still doesn't work.
That is correct: from a cold boot or logout of a User, I get a notice requiring the password, and provide it.
After that, I do NOT get a message requiring a password, but the TouchID does not work.
Thanks!
This appears to be a bug in Ventura that some people have been reporting since Ventura was in beta.
Let us hope that repeated reports and comments will lead Apple to address it in the next Ventura update.
I'm pretty confident, looking at Apple's own online recommendations and on the various recommendations that the experts here have passed on, that no user mistake nor simple fix (reboot, new fingerprints, etc.) will correct this underlying bug. Apple needs to fix it.
For the record (to Apple engineers): I have several Users on my MacAir 2020 M1 -- one for work, one for private, and one without root privileges -- for different internet environments and purposes. Is this a problem affecting only people with multiple Users, or is it also affecting people with just one User?
Interesting and sorry your machine is problematic.
To compare, using 2 M1 Computers all running Ventura 13.2 and am typing this reply on yesterday delivery of the M2 MBA with Ventura 13.0 ( yes 13.0 ) for the moment.
The Touch ID on all 3 machines works as designed and Intended
Go Figure
