whenever I hover over the instrument name under the plug-ins tab it doesn't show the arrows that I need to see before adding any samples to that instrument. Is there any reason why it's doing this??

How is the track set up? You need green software Instrument track.
Then open the Smart controls for the track and change the topmost plugin; only the topmost plugin brick will offer a generator where you can select the AU Sampler.

It is a green track, but for some reason when I hover over that top brick it won't do anything. Should I just restart garageband?
I can't change the software instrument from the plug-ins tab
