Understanding connecting to employer via SSLVPN

Employer wants me to work remotely by connecting my personal computer via VPN and has given instructions. I am not very savvy. I still connect to internet from home using an ethernet cable. Does using the employer's VPN allow the employer to snoop around my computer, i.e., access my personal files? I have work and personal files on the computer. I have read scary stuff online about employer installing material on the computer. I want to know that when I disconnect from VPN, that I am not being spied on.

A VPN provides a secure encrypted connection to your work network. By default you will not connect to any computer at work although it is possible to do so. Most businesses restrict access to servers and storage to users on the corporate network and a VPN allows your computer at home to connect to the internal corporate network to access the business resources.

You do want to be careful with what you do while connected to the VPN since certain remote connections to a business network may route all the network traffic from your connected computer through the corporate network. For example accessing a website in the browser on your computer may send everything back & forth over the business network which is monitored. It all depends how the VPN and company Firewall are configured.

A VPN connection doesn't give the business access to examine the contents your computer.

However, I agree with @BobTheFisherman's suggestion to create a new user account and use that work user account when connecting to the work network with the VPN. This provides an easy method of separating work & personal data.
