The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.

Can't change the "sharing and permissions" in "Get Info" for the internal hard drive. I'm the administrator and using OS 10.14.6.

Any suggestions?

External Hard Drive Permissions Hi, I've been using a external hard drive for a while with no problems. However I now can't make any changes on the drive. When I click 'get info' under sharing and permissions it states that I can only read. However in the privilege box it states I can read and write. I've seen a suggestion that involves clicking the cog in the bottom left hand corner but, unfortunately this has been greyed out. Can anyone help? Please see screen shot above

Permissions on an external hard drive I set up an external hard drive on a previous laptop which I no longer have. It seems that I have set it so that that user is the only with read and write permissions. So from my mac it thinks I'm a user with read only permissions. I really want to be able to use the external hard drive properly, is there a way I can change the permissions from my Mac to get proper access to it and write files to it?

I'm an Admin except in Sharing & Permissions for Harddrives I'm the owner and only user of my laptop. I recently encountered an issue trying to use an application and got the error that I didn't have permission to grant it access to my disk. This prompted me to click on Macintosh HD in my Finder sidebar where I noticed my name User account in not listed under Sharing & Permissions. System (Read & Write), Wheel (Read Only), and Everyone (Read Only) are listed. When I try to add myself, it says, "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission." Same with my external SanDisk Extreme SSD. Did something change?

Mojave locked down the root level of the startup drive. You can't change the permissions.

That would only change permissions on the root level of the hard drive. Unless that is what you wish to modify, changing permissions there will not help.
