How can I 'clip' the movie parts I want and then copy/paste them onto a new disc/application?

Hello everyone, it is my daughter's 21st birthday on 23rd April, and we are going to try to make a movie compilation of assorted embarrassing moments from all our home videos! The home videos are all on disks (we had them converted from old camcorder cassettes via Snappy Snaps). Can anyone offer any advice on how I can 'clip' the parts I want and then copy/paste them onto a new disc/application? I have a very old MacBook Pro, bought in 2010 and still going strong, but the integrated CD drive doesn't work, so I have purchased an external one. I have both iMovie and Quicktime Player installed.

I don't even know if it is possible to select parts of a movie and save them? Thanks in anticipation for your help - I'm a long time mac user but don't really know anything about movie editing so treat me gently (as in 'explain like I'm a child' !).

Copy, not move, the VOB files to your desktop. Ignore the other files, they are not relevant. The VOB files contain the movie that is on the DVD. They are in a highly compressed Mpeg2 format. You now need to convert them into a format that iMovie can read and edit. So, download the free download, Handbrake, and convert the VOB files to Mp4/AAC. Then import the converted files into an iMovie project, where you can edit and split the clips into segments that you can then assemble into a new project to share out and display.

You can get download Handbrake from the internet. Type in Handbrake and its website will be the first displayed. It is the French website with the .fr extension. Don’t download from any other site.

Hi again, I can't seem to import the DVDs from my external DVD drive. As per original post, I want to import them so that I can then cut and paste ('clip' or whatever it's called) the bits I want to make into a new movie project. Trouble is when I insert the DVD into the external drive, this is what it comes up with, and I think the file is incompatible because when I click on 'import media' it won't let me. Is there a software programme or something I should buy that convert the DVD into a format I can use?

Thanks again.
