iPod shuffle will not chrage

The iPod shuffle I purchased last year will not charge. I place it in the dock, the status light flashes orange three times then turns off. I believe it is supposed to stay illuminated when charging

Apparently it is a second generation Shuffle. I have attached an image of it

Can anyone help?
