Photos library will not open (4302)

Well this is sure becoming annoying and I can't seem to figure it out. Not much on the web about this issue. So heres the deal. The photo library was on a WD my cloud NAS drive. Used to access just fine over the network on a MacBook air running High Sierra, however it's been giving "Photos was unable to open the library “_Photos Library”. (4302)" for some time now. To be clear this is not my setup or library its my brothers. So I took his drive, and brought it my place and hooked it up to my network. I am using a iMac with Catalina, however, doesn't matter what I do. Open the library and I get the same error. So then I decided to copy and paste the library off the drive directly onto my HDD, Was able to run the photo repair, does the repair 100% but then says Photos was unable to open the library “Ian Photos Library”. (4302). So Im really at a loss here. Can not figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I notice by still right clicking and show package, the master is still in there and data. Any help greatly appreciated Thank you

Running an iPhoto library from a NAS drive was never sanctioned by Apple. It did work for many until the more stringent protection features of Catalina came along.

You will have to copy the library to an EHD formatted as shown in this screenshot

connected directly by cable to your Mac and run it from there. This user tip explains it more fully: Where is it safe to store a Photos Library - 2019 Version

Hey there Nathan Gogol,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand you’re having issues opening a Photos library. I’ll be happy to help with this.

It sounds like you’ve done some good troubleshooting so far. I know you mentioned you’re on macOS Catalina but please make sure you have the most recent version installed:

How to update the software on your Mac

If it still won’t open, ensure you have a backup or copy of the library saved to another drive before moving forward. Once you’ve done that, go through the steps in this link to check the permissions Photos library but do not go through the steps under ‘If the issue persists’:

Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder

Boot into safe mode after that if you still have issues:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

While in safe mode, press and hold the Options key while opening Photos and select the library you’re having issues with. Then press and hold the Command and Option keys while clicking Choose Library. This will attempt to repair the library while in safe mode. See if the issue is resolved then.

Regards.

I’ve copied the library and transferred to my iMac as well as an external drive. I’ve tried repairing on both including the NAS and it fails exactly the same. It quickly goes to 100% but fails to open. The only thing I have not tried is safe mode. Also being on the NAS it did work fine for a year with the MacBook Air and nothing has changed on that MacBook Air as far as OS is concerned it still what the Mac book came with and I wanna say high Sierra
