I was dragging the safari icon from the applications folder to put it in the dock, however in error I placed it on the desktop on the way. Now I cant remove the safari.app from the desktop and I cant add it to the trash to remove it. How can this safari on desktop be removed please? I cant be the first person to slip with a mouse and add an application to the desktop in error, surely?

Click the stuck icon on the Desktop.
Right click it and choose "Move to Trash".
or
Launch Finder from the Dock.
Click Desktop folder in the sidebar to open it.
Choose and right click on the item.
Choose" Move to Trash".

I see the icon on the desktop at the top right corner.
Force Quit Safari and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply and your suggestion. That doesn't work either way because I get the following error message:
The item “Safari.app” can’t be moved to the Trash because some of its extensions are in use.
and I also tried turning off safari extensions in preferences and that didn't work either
heres a screenshot, marked up to show safari in the dock, on the desktop and in applications
I did, the screenshot below shows its still there
I just did, nothing happens, exactly the same as before
