I dropped my phone last week and can't see the screen to sign in. When I plug it in to the computer it won't register cause I can't open it. This means that I can't turn off find my iphone. What will happen if I can't turn off find my iphone when I send it in for repair?

Go to https://icloud.com/find, put your phone in Lost mode, erase it, and remove it from your account.

Ok. I found my phone but it does not give me an option to do anything except upgrade or view/change my security settings. When I plug it in to the computer, it won't register because I can't see the screen to be able to open it up. How do I restore or erase this?

Ok, so I went to the iCloud but my phone isn't listed. It still has me using an iphone from many years ago. Does this mean that the find my phone is off? Do I still need to erase it?
If the phone isn’t listed that means that either find my iPhone is off, or it is logged in to a different Apple ID. You should erase the old phone and remove it from the account.
