macOS Catalina 200GB+ disappeared in several minutes

I had been importing video tapes using Quicktime and a DV camcorder. This produced about four files between 600MB-3GB. At some point, Quicktime started complaining of no disk space. I noticed that the Macintosh HD - Data disk kept fluctuating between having 16GB free and 120GB free. (I have a 1TB drive.)

After a reboot, the situation did not improve. To attempt to free space, I deleted a 200GB photo library backup.

Then, suddenly, I was back down to 16GB free. (Even though I should have 200GB+ free now!) Currently, the system will not boot except to recovery mode. A regular boot stops at the 100% mark of the status bar.

I've read this could be a situation caused by Time Machine and local snapshots. I don't always keep the backup drive connected to the computer. However, I cannot access these snapshots via command line without booting into the regular OS, as far as I know. And that is currently not possible.

Any thoughts on what to do next?

There was some problem with the local time machine backups. I ultimately solved this by installing Catalina on an external drive and then deleting all the backups from "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" after booting from the external drive.

sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/"

This seems like a serious bug in Catalina. I wasn't doing anything but importing movies into the computer. Apple needs to fix this because a beginner user would not be able to perform these steps, and they shouldn't need to.

I don't know if any of this will help. I suspect there is an OS problem causing a mis-reporting of free space. If this is not the case, then the disk is so full that you are unable to delete files or even restart the computer. If you wish to try, then you can shut down the computer, wait 30 seconds, then restart. If none of this helps, then the only thing you can do is reinstall macOS but you would have to erase the startup volume first.

To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disable

Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots. For more about snapshots see: About Time Machine local snapshots.

Give this a try:

Reinstall El Capitan or Later Without Erasing Drive

Please be sure you back up, if possible.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately, at or before the chime, hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo and progress bar appear. Wait until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
  3. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid button in Disk Utility's toolbar. Wait until the Done button activates, then click on it.
  5. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  6. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.
