Watch under step count vs iphone

How do you give priority to the iPhone over Apple Watch for step count and mileage walked? The phone in my pants pocket is quite accurate the watch knocks off 1000’s of steps and adds miles vs phone. If I use a trekking pole my wrist moves once for every 4 steps when I don’t once for every 2 steps when I walk the dogs once for each step. The watch is very poor at step count. I can’t find a way to turn it off or give phone priority

I disagree. I was talking of the step count. I believe that is done with 3 micro accelerometers, same as were used in initial inertial guidance systems and later survey systems. This is a lot better way to track both steps and distance then GPS

question remains how do you give phone priority over the **** watch or turn watch off of monitoring the steps and distance
