Duplicate photo with different dates

Scrolling thru my photo library I noticed that some photos I took in October 2019 are duplicated and dated as October 2018.

Is there some logical reason this would have happened? They are not labeled as January 2001 but one year before I took them and the time stamp is different from when they were actually taken. The time stamp for the duplicates also span different days similar to the original photos but a year before.

Why would this happen? When I first transferred them to the photos app, the duplicates were not in the library. This happened within the last few months. I noticed the duplicates on my iPad but it occurred on my iMac and iPhone as well. I’m up to date on all software.

any insight would be appreciated.

This may have happened after a software update that rebuild the Photos Library, because the library format has been changed by the update. Sometimes rebuilding the library will recover orphaned image files that are no longer bound to an image version. Orphaned files can occur , if Photos is crashing and cannot close the library probably. Or if deleted images cannot be removed from the Trash. It may also happen, if external editors, plug-ins, or photo editing extensions are storing files directly in the Photos Library. or if cleaning applications are damaging a photos library.

What is the file format of the apparent duplicates? In 2001 you may have used image formats that are no longer compatible with Photos 5 on Catalina. Then these files will need converting to a different format.
