They can’t hear me

In Zoom/Skype/FaceTime on my iPad, I can hear everyone but they can’t hear me. I’ve checked all the obvious things, like going into Settings and making sure the mic is enabled. If I reset my settings, might that fix it? But wouldn’t it also wipe out all my other settings/

Are you using the built-in microphone - or are you using a plug-in headset, Apple earbuds or other headphones?

If using an external microphone, have you tried using the internal microphone (i.e., disconnect the external item) - or if using the internal microphone, have you tried using some Apple earbuds instead?

Yes. I often use AirBuds with my iPad Air but I don’t think I should have to for Zoom/Skype calls, right? Most of the people on my Zoom calls don’t use them and I can hear them fine...but they can’t hear me. I did follow the instructions of one online site and tested recording videos on my front and back cameras - the sound on those videos was fine. But then I tried to record a Voice Memo and my voice did not play back. Does that mean the mic on the bottom isn’t working? Thank you! Can you help?

You should try to identify/isolate the audio source that is causing difficulties - and establish any commonality between Apps.

Does the problem only affect a particular audio source, or a specific App? If one audio source doesn’t work, try another - as this provides essential clues.

For now we can only guide diagnosis of the problem. When we understand the problem, we might be able to provide a resolution.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate your help. I tried that and if I make sure the AirPods are in correctly and speak relatively loudly, I think it works. BUT I still wonder why the iPad mic is not working. Someone suggested going into Settings and “Reset all Settings” to take another stab at getting the iPad mic to work. Does that make any sense to you?

What we’re trying to achieve with our diagnosis - and clearly struggling to make any progress - is whether a hardware or software issue. Using iPhone EarPods will either work (you can successfully communicate) or it won’t (nobody can hear you).

In view of apparent difficulties, I recommend that you contact Apple Support directly to seek their assistance - as they may be better able to actively work through the problem. You’ll find the Contact Support link at top-right of this page.
