Not in sense that “screen savers” were initially intended to protect CRT and Plasma display technologies can suffer burn-in from a continuously displayed static (or near static image) image.
Whilst LCD display technologies can suffer image-artefacts from near continuous display of an unchanging image, “normal” usage doesn’t generally tend to result in lasting damage. Depending upon the technology utilised, backlights can dim or lose effectiveness over time (or screen-bleed effects observed in some circumstances), but these issues are unrelated to displayed content.
For the LCD display families, the addition of “Wallpaper” images serves only as an aesthetic embellishment - or for graphic artists - to provide a neutral background against which colour balance can be more accurately visually assessed.
In summary, no, screen savers serve no technical benefit to your iPad.
I hope this information is helpful to you.

Completely different question - and answer...
Unless you have an explicit technical reason to avoid use of a screen protector, I would always recommend that you seriously consider use of a good quality laminated glass screen protector from a reputable specialist manufacturer - such as Zagg.
The rationale is simple: A glass screen protector provides additional physical protection; it is an expendable surface that, if damaged, can be quickly/easily/cheaply replaced - unlike the physical display that is prohibitively expensive to replace.
I hope this information is helpful to you - in providing an objective and reasoned recommendation.
I guess I misspoke...I meant screen protectors.
