MacBook Air 11” mid-2013 Boot Camp cannot upgrade Windows 10 to latest updates at 93%

There is post from another user who experienced exactly the same with my case, the same mid-2013 MBA 11” (1.7GHz i7, HD Graphics 5000, 8GB RAM), and the same SSD upgraded to 512GB (Apple SSD SM0512G), except that I did successfully installed Windows 10 release version 1511 but never gone beyond that.

Someone suggested the 93% hang maybe due to Intel GPU driver (the Intel HD Graphics 5000), but I also doubted if the self-upgraded SSD (from 256GB to 512GB) may causing problem to the installation process as well?

Everything works now. End up it is really not the concerns of Intel HD 5000 driver, but the Apple SSD SM0512G unofficial upgrade (MacBook Air 2013 did not have 512GB SSD option) that caused the whole problem.

I found one of my later MacBook Pro 13" 2015 which contains exactly the same Apple SSD SM0512G (with Iris Graphics 6100) running Windows 10 1909 fine without problem, I wincloned it to my MacBook Air 2013, it detected devices and everything works.

Naturally I still need to downgrade / upgrade the Intel Graphics Driver properly to support HD 5000 version, but that's relatively straight forward.

Case closed. Thanks everyone again for the last few weeks advices and yes Winclone is a tool indispensable when you have to play around with Boot Camp Windows 10 setup.

Upgrading from W10 1511 to W10 1903 and later requires a SysPrep which the upgrade will run. There are known issues with Intel HD4K/HD5K GPUs and later W10 ISOs.

SysPrep also removes Apple BC drivers. Once the drivers are removed, the update process will hang because it can no longer access the SSD due to the missing SSD driver that the BC drivers normally provide. I had the same issue on a 2013 13-in rMBP. You may want to post this on the Microsoft forum.

Another option to consider is to backup your non-OS files, remove the W10 1511 installation and try to clean-install W10 1903 (or later). Be aware that this may not work correctly on the 2013 Mac.

I had to use W10 1809v2 on a 2014 iMac to work around this issue, which has an AMD GPU, complicating the matters further.

Just spent a bit of time and tried all the below versions of Windows 10 update, downloaded using my MSDN subscription, mounted as Virtual DVD-ROM and run setup directly, with WiFi switched off:

1909 (March-2020)

1809 (May-2019)

1709 (Nov-2017)

1607 (Jan-2017)

All updates go on to a certain degree, and freeze at pre-OOBE (93% at 1909, 88% at 1709, etc).

So I am currently stuck at 1511.

No luck. On my working Windows 10 1909 on MBA 2012, done SysPrep with option Generalize and Shutdown, go back to MacOS and did WinClone. Restored the image to my MBA 2013 Boot Camp partition in question, reboot and it did device detection - 100% through and but then the balls keep spinning for 10 mins, and finally freeze.

Go back to MacOS and inspect the BOOTCAMP partition, \Windows\System32\SysPrep\Panther\setupact.log shows no error at all except warning on Intel driver:

2020-04-29 08:46:33, Warning SYSPRP SPPNP: Missing driver file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\OpenCL\bin\x64\clang_compiler64.dll. Err = 0x3

Anywhere else should I get logs for further diagnoses?

Anyway now I have the Sysprep'ed Winclone image on hand so I can restore it and reproduce the case at any time to play around with it. Just don't know what's next step to mess it up...

Downloaded the Boot Camp Windows device drivers by MacOS on the MBA 2013, going back to Windows 10, this time Windows refuses to enter Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Command Prompt):

"Windows cannot complete installation in Safe Mode. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer."

Normal boot is greeted by:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered in unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click OK to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

Looks like I have to restore the pre-Prepsys'ed image (which at least go into Safe Mode) and try install Boot Camp device drivers again?
