MacBook Air 11” mid-2013 Boot Camp cannot upgrade Windows 10 to latest updates at 93%

There is post from another user who experienced exactly the same with my case, the same mid-2013 MBA 11” (1.7GHz i7, HD Graphics 5000, 8GB RAM), and the same SSD upgraded to 512GB (Apple SSD SM0512G), except that I did successfully installed Windows 10 release version 1511 but never gone beyond that.

Someone suggested the 93% hang maybe due to Intel GPU driver (the Intel HD Graphics 5000), but I also doubted if the self-upgraded SSD (from 256GB to 512GB) may causing problem to the installation process as well?

Everything works now. End up it is really not the concerns of Intel HD 5000 driver, but the Apple SSD SM0512G unofficial upgrade (MacBook Air 2013 did not have 512GB SSD option) that caused the whole problem.

I found one of my later MacBook Pro 13" 2015 which contains exactly the same Apple SSD SM0512G (with Iris Graphics 6100) running Windows 10 1909 fine without problem, I wincloned it to my MacBook Air 2013, it detected devices and everything works.

Naturally I still need to downgrade / upgrade the Intel Graphics Driver properly to support HD 5000 version, but that's relatively straight forward.

Case closed. Thanks everyone again for the last few weeks advices and yes Winclone is a tool indispensable when you have to play around with Boot Camp Windows 10 setup.

Do you use Winclone? If yes, you can backup the 1511 installation, run a SysPrep manually and generalize Windows, and then try to install 1909.

Also, take a look at https://www.ghacks.net/2019/10/21/intel-graphics-drivers-for-windows-10-1909-released-and-heres-whats-new/ .

When I was stuck at the same issue, I chose to ignore the constant nagging about update failures to the latest version of Windows.

The saga continues - I bought a copy of WinClone, and also get back my older 2012 MacBook Air (Intel Graphics HD 4000 that can upgraded to 1909 without problem), use WinClone to make an image, restore it on my 2013 Intel HD 5000 MacBook Air - can boot but OOBE hanged. Reboot it and start it in Safe mode / Safe mode with Command Line, both can login without problem. However normal mode / debug log / etc all get to the Windows login screen then it is freeze - it becomes so slow that keyboard is effectively hanged, and the mouse is very very jumpy (the pointer is being updated on screen once every two seconds).

Then tried to clone the Windows 10 1511 build from 2013 MacBook Air and move it to the older 2012 MacBook Air, again after OOBE all drivers are detected and run without problem, can even upgraded to 1809 (I think 1909 is also ok, but I tried different combinations), again move it back to 2013 MacBook Air it freeze the same way as it was.

Did boot into Safe mode and Run Sysprep.exe but does not help. Now anyone wanna have further advice? This apparently becomes my spare R&D hobby in the pandemic days... :p

I don't get it - restoring fresh Windows 10 from WinClone means I already have a running copy of Windows 10 on a certain Mac, which I must have the necessary Boot Camp drivers installed in order to get it work. So after I run SysPrep w/Generalize and shutdown, then WinClone it, the image still have the Boot Camp drivers of the certain Mac, and after I restore it on MBA 2013 how can I install the BC drivers on Windows 10 before reboot? The question is that even the first time Windows 10 boot (with device detection) it already hang and won't go into Windows desktop.

On the other hand, yesterday adventure result was so close yet so distant - I manage to get 1909 runs on Safe Mode with Network (Wifi), but in Safe Mode I cannot run the Boot Camp setup (it did but only offer repair and end up with a blank OK prompt), and it still freeze upon normal boot.

Time to take a rest now, I'd backup all combinations of Winclone images so I can replay it when I have spare time.

I was this other user... and I have also seen the same exact issue with other users and our model post messages on non-apple websites... no solution has been found yet (by me anyway).

If I get the older windows build installed and working and then try to update with windows update or windows upgrade assistant, it installs but then as far as I could get was it would freeze about 5 seconds after reaching my windows logon screen. The only sign of life my laptop had was that the caps lock light would toggle on or off when I pressed it.

Interestingly, safe mode (and safe mode with networking) both worked fine on the newer build, leading me to believe it HAS to be a driver issue of some kind, although nothing I have tried worked even a little bit. Any further luck on your end?
