I have a late 2016 MaCbook Pro 15 inch. I am considering buying the LG UltraFine 4K display sold by Apple. My laptop had thunderbolt 3 ports, the display is USB-C.. Will I lose anything like resolution if I connect these?

You'll be limited to the 4K resolution. The 2016 iMac can output as much as 5K resolution.
With a 4K display you will be limited to 4K.

If you find that the fans run load with the external display connected, using closed-display mode may allow them to run more quietly:

In addition, some users also trade quieter operation for minuscule performance reduction by turning off single-processor Turbo boost with a third-party Utility.
