Monthly charge for iCloud

I’m being charged .99 cents monthly for extra iCloud storage.

what is the true benefit of this vs the free Apple storage?

The free storage is 5GB. The 99¢ plan is 50GB.

You can use the following to see how much storage you are actually using: Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

If you want to cancel, do that by downgrading to the free 5GB plan. See: Downgrade your iCloud storage - Apple Support
