Found this original question, similar to my issue: "when i send an email then receive an answer both emails are black and i cannot read the returned email unless I delete the original sent email"
I also see this when I reply to an email and then both the original and the response are blacked out.
How do I fix this?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Nope, no change. To be clear, I held down the "Shift" key while I did a "Restart". Did I need to shut the computer down instead?
Might try that, if you didn't see Safe Mode when logging in.
