Out of the blue both my iPhone and my iPad are displaying the message
Please view this email in an HTML compatible client
everything was fine until last week and now both devices are showing the same message.
any ideas?

Are you experiencing difficulties with all received email - or just a specific message on multiple devices?
Not all email client Apps can display all HTML and CSS content; where the mail client cannot render the content, you will see this message.
If the issue that you describe only relates to specific messages, ask the sender to resend the email as plain text - including attachments if necessary in preference to embedded content.
